Today, almost all wired and wireless mice use USB as the interface to the computer. However, older computers may utilize PS/2 or serial ports. If your mouse is wireless, it can be communicating over Bluetooth, RF (radio frequency), or IR(infrared). To proceed, select your connection type from the list below and follow the instructions.

If you want to disconnect a mouse from a computer, do the opposite of the steps provided on this page.

Connecting a wireless USB mouse

A cordless mouse has a small receiver that communicates with the mouse. The receiver connects to the computer via a USB port.

1. Look for a USB port in the back or on the side of your computer and plug in the receiver.

If you are unsure what a USB port looks like, there is an example image in the next section.

2. Once the wireless receiver is connected to the computer, Windows should automatically find and install the appropriate drivers as long as you're connected to the Internet.
3. Make sure there are batteries in the mouse or that it is charged.
4. Next, verify that the mouse is turn on. Many wireless devices have an on and off switch on the bottom of them.

Connecting a wired USB mouse

Connect the USB cable coming from the mouse to one of the USB ports (shown right) on the back or side of your computer. If you are using a USB port hub, connect the mouse cable to that.

After the mouse is connected, the computer should automatically install the drivers and provide basic functionality. If the mouse you want to change how any special buttons work, additional software may need to be installed.

Connecting a Bluetooth mouse

A Bluetooth mouse connects to a computer wirelessly using a Bluetooth signal. The computer must have built-in Bluetooth or have a Bluetooth adapter connected to it.

To connect a Bluetooth mouse to your computer, follow the steps below.

1. Open the Bluetooth utility on your computer and make sure Bluetooth is turned on. The Bluetooth utility, if enabled, can usually be found in the notification area, with an icon that looks like the Bluetooth symbol.
2. Turn on the mouse if it has an On/Off switch. Check the Bluetooth utility to see if it detects the Bluetooth mouse.
3. When the Bluetooth utility finds the Bluetooth mouse, select the mouse in the Bluetooth device list and click the Pair button.
4. If successful, the mouse will be connected to the computer.

If the Bluetooth utility does not detect the Bluetooth mouse, check the bottom of the mouse or inside the battery compartment for a small button. If found, press the button, as it may be required for the mouse to be discoverable by the computer. If no button is found and the mouse came with a software installation disc, install the mouse software on the computer. After installing, check the Bluetooth utility to see if it detects the Bluetooth mouse.

Connecting a PS/2 mouse

Before connecting or disconnecting the PS/2 mouse, make sure the computer is turned off.

Connect the cable coming from the mouse to the green-colored PS/2 port (shown right) on the back of the computer. If your PS/2 ports are not color-coded, the mouse port will be the one furthest away from the left edge of the computer case (when viewed from the back).

Connecting a serial mouse

When connecting or disconnecting a serial mouse, make sure the computer is turned off.

Connect the mouse to the serial port on the back of the computer. If you have more than one serial port on the computer, we recommend connecting the mouse to the first port. Once connected, depending on your computer setup, you may need to configure the mouse COM ports in CMOS setup.

Today, most computers no longer have serial ports. Most serial mice are specialized, so to use one, you need to install the software included with the mouse, or from the mouse manufacturer's website.

If you're having problems connecting a serial mouse to a computer either because it does not have a serial port, or the serial port is not working, consider using a serial to USB adapter.

CMOS setup

If you have an older computer (2005 or earlier) with a serial or USB mouse, it may be necessary to configure the ports in CMOS setup. If you have a newer computer, this section can be skipped.

Older computers with serial mice

If you're using a serial mouse and it's having issues with being detected, verify that the serial ports or COM ports are enabled and properly assigned in CMOS.

Older computers with USB

If the mouse connects via USB, make sure USB is enabled and if available, also ensure that the USB legacy support is enabled. USB legacy support allows the mouse to work in legacy mode, for example, DOS.

Troubleshooting

If your mouse is not working after following the steps above, additional troubleshooting may be required.

It may still be for others too. So far, none other can handle my data the way I need it.At least recently, Intuit hired a new team to work on making significant updates to Quicken for Mac. Find out if your Mac has Bluetooth

Most Mac computers come with Bluetooth technology built-in. You can check to see if your computer supports Bluetooth:

• Look for the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar. If the Bluetooth icon is present, your computer has Bluetooth.
• Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click Bluetooth. If the Bluetooth preferences lists options for enabling Bluetooth and making your device discoverable, Bluetooth is installed.
• From theApplemenu, choose About this Mac, then click More Info. Select Bluetooth from the Hardware section. If the Hardware Setting section shows information, your system has Bluetooth installed.
  

About Bluetooth menu bar icons

The Bluetooth menu bar icon in the upper-right of your display gives you information about the status of Bluetooth and connected devices:

Bluetooth is on, but there are no devices connected to your Mac. If you expect a wireless device to be connected, make sure it's turned on.

Bluetooth is on and at least one wireless device is connected.

At least one wireless device has a low battery. Click the Bluetooth icon to identify the affected device, then replace its batteries.

Bluetooth is off. Click the Bluetooth icon using a wired mouse or trackpad or the built-in trackpad on your Mac notebook and select Turn Bluetooth On.
Mac computers without built-in trackpads won’t allow Bluetooth to be turned off unless a USB mouse is connected.

Bluetooth is offline and unavailable. Restart your Mac. If the Bluetooth status doesn’t change, disconnect all USB devices and restart your Mac again. If Bluetooth continues to show as unavailable, you might need to get your Mac serviced.

Pair your Mac with a Bluetooth device

Bluetooth wireless devices are associated with your computer through a process called pairing. After you pair a device, your Mac automatically connects to it anytime it's in range.

If your Mac came with a wireless keyboard, mouse, or trackpad, they were pre-paired at the factory. Turn on the devices and your Mac should automatically connect to them when your computer starts up.

After you pair a Bluetooth device with your Mac, you should see it listed in Bluetooth preferences:

Remove a Bluetooth device from your Mac

If you want to remove (unpair) a Bluetooth device from your Mac's device list, follow these steps:

1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.
2. Hover the pointer over the device you want to remove, then click the button that appears next to the device's name.

After you remove a Bluetooth device, you'll have to repeat the pairing process if you want to use it again.

Connect to Bluetooth devices after wake or startup

Bluetooth devices are usually available a few moments after your Mac completes its startup process. After waking from sleep, your Mac should find Apple wireless devices right away. Other wireless devices can take up to 5 seconds to be recognized. You might need to click a button on your wireless mouse to wake it up.

Some Bluetooth devices, such as audio headsets, might disconnect to conserve the device's battery power after no audio or data is present for a certain amount of time. When this happens, you might need to push a button on the device to make it active again. Check the documentation that came with your device for more information.

Wake your computer with Bluetooth devices

You can click your paired Bluetooth mouse or press a key on your paired Bluetooth keyboard to wake your Mac. You might need to press the space bar on the keyboard.

If clicking the mouse or pressing a key doesn't wake the computer, you might need to allow wireless devices to wake up your computer:

Connect multiple Bluetooth devices to one computer

The official Bluetooth specifications say seven is the maximum number of Bluetooth devices that can be connected to your Mac at once.

However, three to four devices is a practical limit, depending on the types of devices used. Some devices require more Bluetooth data, so they're more demanding than other devices.t perform reliably, try turning off devices you aren't using or unpair them from your Mac.
