If you would like to update Office but can't open any of your Office apps, try repairing your Office suite: Go to Control Panel Programs Uninstall a program. Find and select your version of Microsoft Office on your computer. In the bar above, click Change. Select Quick Repair Repair. Update Office from the Mac App Store. If you downloaded Office from the Mac App Store, and have automatic updates turned on, your apps will update automatically. But you can also manually download the updates: Open the Mac App Store from your Dock or Finder.

Older versions up to and including 16.16 can be activated with an Office 2016 for Mac volume license. You can’t activate version 16.17 or later with an Office 2016 for Mac volume license.
